Hamburg’s HafenCity (lit: Harbour City) is the largest building site in Europe. It will increase the size of Hamburg’s inner city by 40 percent, and is celebrated as a pinnacle of modern urbanity. No other European city boasts such a large-scale inner city area of housing, office and living space beingcreated from scratch. Claudia Willke and Katharina Höcker have interviewed its first inhabitants, who have been living in the convergence of cold construction and incalculable vitality for more than two years, reporting on what the much discussed “new urbanity” actually signifies in practise.
