Jalainur, a major Mongolian coal mine, is one of the last places in the world where steam engines are still put to use. An era comes to an end as the mine is soon to be shut down. The film centres on the conflict between tradition and modernity, capitalism and communism. When the old engine driver Zhu goes missing just before his retirement, his younger colleague Li Zhizhong begins a search. Director Zhao Ye examines a changing society, reminiscent of the early industrialization.
