After a long day's casting, Paris theatre director Thomas (Mathieu Amalric) is about to throw in the towel. None of the actresses he's seen corresponds to the picture he has in his head. Then Vanda (Emmanuelle Seigner) turns up, seeming to embody everything he detests: naive and simple, and prepared to do anything to get the part. Whilst they rehearse, a intense game begins between them that awakens the most secret passions... After Carnage, Oscar-winner Roman Polanski has filmed another stage play that was received in Cannes with a standing ovation.
