Closed Curtain Iran 2013 | 106 min | OV | Colour | FF 2013

Jafar Panahi

Films by JAFAR PANAHI (*1960) have won many awards, including The Mirror (1997), The Circle (2000) and Offside (2006) making him one of Iran's most important independent film-makers. Because of his criticism of the regime, most of his films are not shown in Iran. The Accordion (2010), This Is not a Film (2011) and Closed Curtain (2013) have all been shown at Filmfest Hamburg.

A man barricades himself and his dog in a villa. He's not actually allowed to own the animal, as in the eyes of Islam it is unclean. A woman arrives. She is also wanted by the police. The man and woman eye each other with suspicion. How does she know that he is being sought by the police? The two are like prisoners in a house with drawn curtains. Only when the director enters the scene is the curtain lifted a little. But truth keeps being overtaken by fiction. Director Jafar Panahi shot Closed Curtain in secret near the Caspian Sea in Northern Iran and in absentia won the prize for best screenplay at this year's Berlinale.
