Academy Award Nominations

Four films from last year's film festival programme are up for the most important award. Nomadland, Sound of Metal and Another Round  have been nominated more than once. In addition to Another Round for Denmark, Quo Vadis, Aida for Bosnia-Herzegovina is also in the running for the Oscar for International Feature Film.

FILMFEST HAMBURG's closing film Nomadland by Chloé Zhao was nominated in the categories Best Picture, Directing (Chloé Zaho), Film Editing (Chloé Zhao), Writing /Adapted Screenplay (Chloé Zaho), Cinematography (Joshua James Richards) and Actress in a Leading Role (Francis McDormand). Nomadland tells the story of a woman who leaves in her van to live a life outside the conventional society as a modern nomad.

In Sound of Metal, the band musician and drummer Ruben has to face a heavy stroke of fate: he has lost his sense of hearing. The film by Darius Marder was nominated for Best Picture. Actors Riz Ahmed (Actor in a Leading Role) and Paul Raci (Actor in a Supporting Role) also have a chance of winning an Oscar. Sound of Metal is also nominated in the categories Writing/ Original Screenplay (Darius Marder, Abraham Marder), Film Editing (Mikkel E.G. Nielsen) and Sound (Nicolas Becker, Jaime Baksht, Michelle Couttolenc, Carlos Cortés and Phillip Bladh ).

Another Round by Thomas Vinterberg about four friends who start an alcoholic self-experiment is in the Oscar running for International Feature Film. The Danish director is also nominated in the Directing category. Quo Vadis, Aida by Jasmila Žbanić, a cinematic examination of the Srebrenica massacres, has also been nominated in the International Feature Film category for Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The 93rd Academy Awards will take place on 25 April in Los Angeles.
