The Locarno competition entry A Voluntary Year by Ulrich Köhler and Henner Winckler and Uli Edel's remake of the Theodor Fontane classic Unterm Birnbaum are two of twelve films in the »Televisionen« section that will be competing for the Hamburg producer prize »Deutsche Fernsehproduktionen«. The 25,000 Euro award is donated by the VFF Verwertungsgesellschaft der Film- und Fernsehproduzenten mbH. The documentary film Der Schauspieler Ulrich Tukur - Träumer und Suchender by Eva Gerberding as well as a new episode of Lars Becker's Nachtschicht will be shown out of competition.
»We are very pleased about the thematic diversity of this year's competition selection. They are intense stories about family secrets, about growing up, about love and betrayal and about an unknown chapter of German-German history,« says Friedemann Beyer, head of the Television section.
In Auf dem Grund by Thorsten M. Schmidt, produced by Anja Föringer (Hager Moss Film for ARD/NDR), a young woman sets out in search of the truth about her family. The leading roles are played by Claudia Michelsen, Karin Hanczewski and Eleonore Weisgerber.
Their daughter's anorexia (Lisa-Marie Koroll) makes the parents (Anja Kling, Oliver Mommsen) despair. How can they help their child? In Aus Haut und Knochen, produced by Sam Davis and Kim Fatheuer (Rowboat film and television production for SAT 1), Christina Schiewe sensitively approaches a widespread disease.
The film Kranke Geschäfte by Urs Egger, produced by Franziska An der Gassen (Rat Pack Filmproduktion/An der Gassen Film for ZDF) and starring Corinna Harfouch, Florian Stetter, Jörg Schüttauf and Felicitas Woll, illuminates a little known chapter of German-German history: in order to obtain foreign exchange, West German pharmaceutical companies were allowed by the GDR to test their newly developed medications on East German hospital patients for years without the latter ever knowing about it.
After the celebrated world premiere in Locarno, the team of A Voluntary Year with directors Ulrich Köhler and Henner Winckler as well as actors Maj-Britt Klenke, Thomas Schubert and Sebastian Rudolph will be guests in Hamburg. The intensive father-daughter drama, produced by Ingmar Trost (Sutor Kolonko Filmproduktion for ARD/WDR), is a concentrated study about the challenge of growing up.
Das Gesetz sind wir stars Julia Koschitz and Aljoscha Stadelmann as imaginative patrolmen in Bremen. Director Markus Imboden explores the boundaries between the rule of law and the perception of justice with a satirical undertone. The film was produced for ZDF by André Zoch, Alexandra Kordes and Meike Kordes of Kordes & Kordes Film Süd.
Has Nina's new boyfriend, who killed his ex-girlfriend in the heat of the moment and spent seven years in prison for it, anything to do with the murder in the neighborhood? Irgendwas bleibt immer by Thomas Kronthaler, produced by Uli Aselmann and Sophia Aldenhoven (d.i.e. film gmbh for ZDF) with Lisa Maria Pothoff, Manuel Ruby, Justus von Dohnányi and Ulrike Krumbiegel in the leading roles, is a suggestive psychothriller about the power of trust and its fragility.
Competition stimulates the business - and the relationship: When meeting the swarming lover of his wife (Walter Sittler), Georg (Christian Kohlund) sees his old love Christine (Suzanne von Borsody) with new eyes. Dirk Kummer stages Der Liebhaber meiner Frau, produced by Sabine Timmermann (LETTERBOX film production on behalf of ARD/Degeto), as a romantic comedy.
With Eine fremde Tochter, produced by Oliver Behrmann (Aspekt-Telefilm Produktion Hamburg for ARD/NDR), Grimme prizewinner Stefan Krohmer stages a dense drama about family and life models and the difficulty of accepting them: After the accident-related death of her single mother, 15-year-old Alma (Hannah Schiller) moves in with her father (Mark Waschke), who has been living in a gay partnership since the separation from his wife. Alma has a hard time facing the unusual constellation.
In Polizeiruf 110 - Dunkler Zwilling (directed by Damir Lukačević), produced by Iris Kiefer (filmpool fiction for ARD/NDR), Commissioner Bukow (Charly Hübner) and colleague König (Anneke Kim Sarnau) come across long-ago, unsolved murder cases with a similar pattern during their investigations after the discovery of a corpse.
Mia Spengler (Back for Good) makes her Tatort debut with Die goldene Zeit. The producers are Uwe Kolbe and Björn Vosgerau from Wüste Medien (for ARD/NDR). During investigations in Hamburg, Thorsten Falke (Wotan Wilke Möhring) is confronted with his own criminal past. Together with his colleague Julia Grosz (Franziska Weisz), he investigates against the power of criminal gangs in St. Pauli.
To mark the 200th birthday of the famous writer, Uli Edel stages Theodor Fontane's novella Unterm Birnbaum as a psychogram of a village community transferred to the present. The remake was produced by Jan Richard Schuster and Michael Luda of mecom fiction for ZDF. In the leading roles: Fritz Karl, Julia Koschitz, Devid Striesow and Katharina Thalbach.
In Lars Becker's television film Wahrheit oder Lüge, produced by Jutta Lieck-Klenke and Dietrich Kluge (Network Movie Film- und Fernsehproduktion Hamburg for ZDF), Nathalia Wörner plays a successful lawyer specializing in sexual criminal law. Commissioned by her boss (Fritz Karl), she is to prevent proceedings in a new rape case and seek a settlement. But she refuses, because the victim is a friend of hers (Franziska Hartmann).
FILMFEST HAMBURG shows the documentary Der Schauspieler Ulrich Tukur - Träumer und Suchender produced by Marianne Schäfer and Markus Augé (Florian Film) out of competition. Eva Gerberding accompanies Tukur through Germany, France, Italy and Greece and takes a personal look at the renowned actor and entertainer.
Again this year there is a new episode of Lars Becker's popular series, Nachtschicht - Cash & Carry (out of competition), with a first-class cast consisting of Barbara Auer, Minh-Khai Phan-Thi, Armin Rohde, Benno Führmann, Pit Bukowski and Friederike Becht. The producers are Bettina Wente and Wolfgang Cimera (Network Movie Film- und Fernsehproduktion Köln).
Twelve films compete for the Hamburg producer prize »Deutsche Fernsehproduktion«, endowed with 25,000 euros. The prize money is provided by the VFF Verwertungsgesellschaft der Film- und Fernsehproduzenten mbH. A three-member jury (Natja Brunckhorst, screenwriter and actress; Ilona Schultz, producer; Friedrich Wildfeuer, producer) decides on the winning film.
The »Televisionen« section will be presented for the sixth time by Deutsche Fernsehlotterie.
