FILMFEST trailer

2. August 2023

From the shooting gallery to the cinema foyer: this year’s FILMFEST HAMBURG trailer looks through the eyes of new faces and old acquaintances at a colourful world of strange fantasies that ends where the cinema experience begins: on the screen. The trailer was realised by Anna-Lena Schwing and Maximilian Mundt and can be seen in selected cinemas and online on the festival’s social media channels from Thursday.

The trailer is produced by Katrin Weber and co-produced by VP Vollprogramm Film und Fernsehproduktionen. “Usually the FILMFEST motto comes first, and then the matching trailer is made. But this year we were allowed to submit our concept first,” reveals the young directing duo Anna-Lena Schwing and Maximilian Mundt, who are best known as actresses (How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast), 2019, Sløborn, 2020). “We love offbeat and bizarre genre stories, which is what cinema stands for and what distinguishes it from television productions. It dares to be more and that’s what we were guided by in our trailer.”

The central element is the eyes, through which the story of the trailer is told. Sometimes brown, sometimes green, sometimes blue, they carry the audience through the locations and narratives of the short film. Sometimes as a pair of eyes, sometimes as a distant object, they stand for the different points of view and perspectives and invite us to broaden our own (cinematic) horizons – in keeping with the tradition of FILMFEST HAMBURG.

Another highlight: Many old friends met again during the shooting of the trailer. Bjarne Mädel, who is a FILMFEST HAMBURG fan not only because of his role as the scary car repair shop owner in the FILMFEST HAMBURG trailer 2021, but also because of the premiere of his directorial debut 2020 (Sörensen hat Angst), has already worked closely with both directors. And there was another important reason for him to be part of the FILMFEST HAMBURG trailer: “It is Albert Wiederspiel’s last year as festival director,” says the actor, “so this is my personal farewell to him”.

FILMFEST HAMBURG will take place from 28 September to 7 October 2023 under this year’s motto “See differently”. Over 110 productions from all over the world will be shown as world, European, German or Hamburg premieres. Festival cinemas are the Abaton, Alabama Kino CinemaxX Dammtor, Metropolis, Passage and the Studio-Kino. The complete programme will be announced on 12 September, and advance ticket sales will start on 14 September.
