The big winner at the European Film Awards ceremony in Lucerne on 7 December was Jacques Audiard’s opulent cinema show Emilia Pérez.
The film by this year’s Douglas Sirk Award winner was honoured in five categories: European Film (Pascal Caucheteux, Jacques Audiard, Valérie Schermann, Anthony Vaccarello), European Director (Jacques Audiard), European Screenwriter Screenplay (Jacques Audiard), European Actress (Karla Sofía Gascón) and European Editing (Juliette Welfling). Further prizes went to Abou Sangare as European Actor in Soulymane’s Story. Marc-Olivier Brullé, Pierre Bariaud, Charlotte Butrak, Samuel Aïchoun and Rodrigo Diaz also received the European Film Award for Best Sound for this film. Armand by Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel was named EUROPEAN DISCOVERY – Prix FIPRESCI. Jagna Dobesz was honoured for European Production Design in Magnus von Horn’s The Girl with the Needle, while Frederikke Hoffmeier received the award for European Original Score. On 6 December, European students from 21 universities presented the European University Film Award (EUFA) to the film Three Kilometres to the End of the World by Emanuel Pârvu. The European Lifetime Achievement Award went to director and 2017 Douglas Sirk Award winner Wim Wenders.
A total of 31 films, directors, screenwriters and actors from the 2023 and 2024 FILMFEST HAMBURG programmes were nominated for the European Film Awards.
