Story
A widow in Kashmir is denied a new start and is instead forced to undergo an odyssey through a maze of corrupt bureaucracy. Aasia is a so-called half widow: seven years ago, her husband was abducted by Indian security forces and has since been considered dead. Indian bureaucrats, however, don’t see it that way – for them, he is alive until his death is documented on paper. Which is no problem they say, as long as Aasia is willing to pay for a few small gifts. Parveen Morchhale uses lyrical pictures to portray the lot of Kashmiri women in a patriarchal society, but without prettifying their fate.
