Villa Touma

OT: Villa Touma

Suha Arraf // Palestinian territories, 2014
Fiction Feature // FF2014

A villa in Ramallah. Three Christian Palestinian sisters have retreated behind the walls of their estate. As if locked in a time capsule, they ignore the mass flight of the other aristocrats and lose themselves in nostalgia for the good old days. This atmosphere of stasis is suddenly broken by the arrival of the sisters’ young niece Badia. To keep the family name unsullied, she is supposed to marry a Christian man from the upper class. Soon, the first candidates are chosen, but Badia’s heart has other plans.

Suha Arraf was born in an Arab village in Israel on the border with Lebanon. She wrote the screenplay to Die syrische Braut [The Syrian Bride] (2004) and Lemon Tree (2008). Her documentary Women of Hamas (2010) won several prizes. Villa Touma is her debut feature as director.
