Story
Society in the not-too-distant future, in which living together is of paramount importance. Singles are arrested and taken to an institution called “The Hotel”. Here, they have 45 days to find a suitable partner. If they fail, they are turned into the animals of their choice and released into the woods. David (Colin Farrell) manages to escape The Hotel into the forest, but here The Loners are in charge. The dogma of their restrictive regime is solitude. Partnerships are strictly forbidden. But David falls in love with a woman (Rachel Weisz) – thus breaking the rules. With biting humour, The Lobster tells its story in the form of a dark, sinister fable and won this year’s Jury Prize at Cannes.
Director
Since his film Dogtooth (2009), YORGOS LANTHIMOS (*1973) has been recognized as a powerful, idiosyncratic voice in European genre cinema.
