Story
Thomas Lawes’ film is a wonderful homage to independent cinemas in general, and to the “Electric” in Birmingham, the oldest independent cinema in Great Britain in particular. Lawes himself saved it from demolition in 2004 and restored its original Art Déco style. In The Last Projectionist, he tells the Electric’s story, from the beginnings in the silent film era in 1909 through its use as a newsreel theatre in World War II. to its period of shame in the 1970s and 80s when it was a greasy porn den. In interviews with different owners and projectionists, he recreates not only the past, but turns to the present and asks: in the digital era, is the cinema losing its soul?
