Story

Documentary “I had nothing against the state. But the state had something against me.” Moazzam Begg, son of a Pakistani banker, was born in Birmingham. In the 1990s, after the massacres of Muslims he supported the Mujahideen in Bosnia. For humanitarian reasons, as he says. After the turn of the century, he went to Pakistan and Afghanistan and joined the resistance to the Western military intervention. After his spectacular capture, which was shown all over the world, he was imprisoned in Guantanamo Bay. In a long interview, accompanied by insistent, occasionally sharp questioning from the director, Begg tells his story. It’s one of imprisonment without verdict and of the exclusion of a Briton from British society. And of the degree of complexity involved in being a Muslim on the threshold between religion and political ideology. The film withstands the ambiguities, listens and digs deeper.
