Story

The boat has sunk, people are in the water. Only occasionally does the camera briefly surface, as if coming up for air – only to then immediately submerge again. For above water there is no rescue to be expected: the horizon is upside down, permanently tilting back and forth and the shore we can see could be the one we’re trying to escape from. Under water it’s quieter, the screams are muffled. The narration, the memories and future aspirations of a woman, who is a lover, a mother, a student – and a survivor. The migration route across the Mediterranean is the setting for Purple Sea, from here Amel Alzakout develops the urgent questions about the testimony and omissions of the West. In the face of the human catastrophe, the film makes an offer which is without doubt unsettling. But we can also understand it as an act of faith and grasp the outstretched hand!https://dokfilmwoche.com/de/project/purple-sea/
