Story

OPENING FILM Collecting donations for the gay scene in plastic buckets is no longer enough for Mark. In the moralizing era of Margaret Thatcher, he wants his initiative to also support the striking miners. No sooner said than done: in a wave of euphoria, L.G.S.M (Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners) is founded – thus bringing together Bronski Beat and Gaelic folk. But when the courageous townies travel to Wales in their colourful bus to visit the miners and their families in their villages, not everyone is enthusiastic. Instead of gratitude, fists fly. Both sides nevertheless pull themselves together, smashing barriers and conventions. They dance, cry and fight together – with historic consequences. Based on true events, this British comedy today seems like something out of a fairy tale, featuring everyman heroes able to move mountains – in the tradition of The Commitments and The Full Monty. Pride closed the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs section of the Cannes film festival this year to a standing ovation.
