Story

Sergei is a new boy at a boarding school for the deaf. He soon gets to know the ruthless rules and rituals that reign in this closed-off microcosm. It is a world of violence, crime and prostitution. When the new boy proves himself in several robberies, he quickly climbs up the school hierarchy. But then he falls in love with one of the leader’s girlfriends, thus breaking an unwritten law of the “tribe”. The Ukrainian drama puts all its weight behind the dramatic power of sign language. With neither subtitles nor voice-over, the film entails a new perception of the senses – love and hate need no translation.

Director

With The Tribe, Myroslav Slaboshpytskiy (*1974) celebrated his feature film debut and promptly won three prizes at this year's Semaine de la Critique in Cannes.
