Story
In ancient mythology, mother pelicans fed their young their own blood if they were in danger of starving: a film about a woman whose motherly instincts know no limits. Wiebke (Nina Hoss) is a horse trainer and single parent of a 9-year old adopted daughter. She is happy to adopt a second girl, 5-year old Raya from Bulgaria. But it soon turns out that Raya has a serious psychological disorder and with her irascible and aggressive behaviour presents a danger to her environment. Against the advice of her doctors and friends, Wiebke declares that she will find a way to help the child and puts it through a therapy which takes on ever more delusional traits.
