Story

Community, strength and joie de vivre are the central themes of the feature film debut by renowned documentary filmmaker Barry Barclay. When Greg, a young Australian, comes to visit, he is confronted with a multicultural society in mid-upheaval. The parents of terminally ill Ropata must decide whether to entrust their son to modern doctors or to traditional Maori medicine. Set in the minor Maori community of Kapua,”Ngati” (Maori for “tribe”) is the first film from New Zealand with an almost all-Maori cast.

Director

Barry Barclay (1944–2008) has been coined New Zealand’s "indisputably greatest documentarian". With his documentary series "Tangata Whenua" (1974) he gave indigenous Maori life its first voice in film. His works include "Te Rua" (1991), "The Feathers of Peace" (2000) and "The Kaipara Affair" (2005).
