Story

THE DIAPER CAKE

Vitya visits his wife and newly-born son in hospital. While the parents attempt to wake the baby for its feed, they try and deal with the irreversible changes to their lives and relationship. And all the while the diaper cake lies in the room like a ticking time bomb.

Bakhmut, a small town in Eastern Ukraine, stands for the dichotomy between Soviet past and Western future. The film is an observation on the monuments left by various regimes and how these influence people in their daily lives. The high point of cultural and political boundary-drawing is to be found in one product: Soviet Champagne.

LITURGY OF ANTI-TANK OBSTACLES

Life in the Ukraine is divided into two phases – before the war and after it. Many Ukrainians are changing jobs and adapting to the demands of wartime. In art studios, sculptors are making tank traps. Silent figures of Ukrainian celebrities, angels, Cossacks and several copies of Jesus Christus are frozen like a terracotta army awaiting orders.
