Story

Captain Kohrshid is a seaman. Although he has only one hand, he still manages to steer his little boat. One day, because of the region’s hot climate and the harsh conditions, prisoners are exiled to Kohrshid’s village. And they want to escape this inhospitable place as quickly as possible. Via a go-between, they suggest to Kohrshid that they pay him to take them abroad. After initial doubts, the captain agrees – and a murderous wave of violence begins that then cannot be stopped and even sucks him in out at sea. The film is an adaptation of Ernest Hemingway’s To Have and Have Not and was celebrated on release as a milestone in Iranian cinema.

Director

Nasser Taghvai (*1941) is above all known for his literary adaptations and the dense atmosphere of his depiction of Southern Iran. Captain Kohrshid won the Bronze Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival in 1988.
