Story

Unhappy birthday: during her party, 11-year old Angeliki commits suicide. The family and its patriarch, the child’s grandfather, who rules with a strict but caring hand, is strangely unmoved by the tragedy. But the authorities find nothing untoward in their enquiries. With disturbing sobriety, the film dissects step by step the balance of power in the “good” family and uncovers the horror behind the bourgeois facade. Miss Violence is based on a true story and won the Silver Lion at Venice in 2013 for Best Director. Themis Panou, who plays the patriarch, won the award for Best Actor.

Director

Alexander Avranas (*1977) studied art in Athens and Berlin. His debut film Without (2008) won prizes at the festivals in Thessaloniki and Milan. Miss Violence is his second film.
