Story
In puritanical post-war France, a couple are forced to hide behind a façade. A gripping social drama reminiscent of the melodramas of Douglas Sirk. 1947: Madeleine works as a waitress in a hotel restaurant and is the mother of a little boy. What no-one else knows: his father is a German soldier. When Madeleine gets to know François on a beach in Normandy, she falls in love with the wealthy, educated student and later marries him. It is as if they have a common secret destiny: François too has a secret he is trying to escape.
