Story
Oskar Roehler’s homage to film icon Rainer Werner Fassbinder can rely 100% on its charismatic leading actor: Oliver Masucci doesn’t just play Fassbinder, he becomes one with him. When the 22-year old Rainer Werner Fassbinder storms the stage of Munich’s Antitheater in 1967 and takes over the production, no-one knows that this cheeky fellow will one day be the most important film-maker in Germany. Fassbinder quickly attracts a following of actors, self-publicists and lovers. He makes one film after another, causing furores at the film festivals of Berlin and Cannes. The young director polarizes, both professionally and personally. But his endless appetite for work, the physical self-exploitation of everyone involved and an unquenchable appetite for drugs soon claim the first victims. Oskar Roehler uses an artistic dramaturgy of colour and lighting along with unusual locations to recreate Fassbinder’s universe. Episodes from Fassbinder’s life illustrate the artist’s full spectrum: from the director of genius and soul searching desperately for love to the ruthless victimizer.
