Story
A visually and emotionally striking drama about the traumas of two women shortly after the end of World War 2. Leningrad 1945: the siege is over, but the daily struggle for survival goes on. Iya, a tall, thin, young woman who suffers from autistic blackouts took care of her friend Masha’s son during the war – and then loses him in a tragic accident. When Masha returns to the ruined city, she has no time to deal with the loss properly, her hunger for a life and a future is too strong. She wants another child and, as she can no longer bear children, she asks Iya to help.
Director
KANTEMIR BALAGOV (*1991) studied film direction under Alexander Sokurov and his debut feature Closeness won the FIPRESCI Prize at Cannes in 2017. Beanpole is his second film and premiered in the section Un Certain Regard at Cannes.Trailer
