Originally prohibited by the censors, it is today difficult to see what could have caused such offence when “Die arme Jenny” (Poor Jenny) was released in 1912. Asta Nielsen plays a simple girl who falls prey to an elegant seducer and then pays for the brief moments of happiness she enjoys with a long martyrdom as a Berlin whore.
