Sylvain George

SYLVAIN GEORGE (*1968) studied philosophy and worked as social worker before turning to film. Today, he is seen as one of France's most influential political documentary film-makers. In 2013, FILMFEST HAMBURG showed his film Vers Madrid: The Burning Bright.

DOCUMENTARY After the terror attacks on Paris in November 2015, a state of emergency was declared and the right of assembly strictly limited. Nevertheless, or maybe precisely for this reason, that winter thousands of people gathered on the Place de la République and the movement „Nuit debout“ – "Upright through the night" -- was formed. Sylvain George roams the demonstrations, capturing the emotions and movements of the collective body in breath-taking black and white pictures. He senses not so much political demands as the dynamics of the protest and attempts a filmed aesthetic of the resistance.
