Story
In her adaption, Andrea Arnold breathes new life into the much-filmed literary classic – with wild, hand-held camerawork and newcomers cast more or less in the street. Yorkshire in the early 19th century. Farmer Earnshaw meets the homeless Heathcliff in Liverpool. He decides to take the boy in on his remote manor estate Wuthering Heights on the moors. Heathcliff soon falls passionately in love with the farmer’s daughter. After Earnshaw’s death, his son Hindley sends his unloved stepbrother packing. Cathy is wooed by a wealthy neighbour. Torn between love and common sense, she makes a fateful decision.
»It was a tough journey and I didn’t achieve exactly what I wanted. But I tried. I didn’t write the book, that was probably the problem. Emily Brontë wrote it.« (Andrea Arnold)
